The medieval townscape of Schongau, with its walls, gates and towers, is living proof of the rich history of our neighbouring town. At the turn of the 13th century, vested with rights of their own, the town was the administrative centre, the second home of the Wittelsbach family and the Bavarian border fortress on the Swabian Lech.

Attractions in Schongau:

– The Stadtpfarr-kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt church is ornately decorated with a high altar by Franz Xaver Schmädl, based on a design by Ignaz Günther.

– Historical tours of the town.

– The largely preserved town wall (the oldest parts of which date back to the 13th century) some with accessible defensive corridors and 5 gates and towers.

– Gothic “Ballenhaus” (1419/1515) with steep stepped gable and a council chamber with carved beamed ceiling.

Town museum with valuable coin collection.

Special recommendation for families with children:

– Fairytale forest with game reserve between Peiting and Schongau.

– “Plantsch” family pool and sauna facility.
